Ice skating at the windmills of World Heritage Kinderdijk on a cold winter day. I see the combination of windmills and ice skating on nature ice as a typical Dutch scene. It is an experience to look forward to every winter, but which unfortunately rarely happens. It must freeze hard for several nights in a row so that the ice is thick enough to stand on.

The third weekend of December 2022 seemed to be the time after all. I was visiting the windmills of Kinderdijk and saw with great joy that the water had frozen and people were ice skating on the ice. What a beautiful sight to see!

Unfortunately I hadn’t brought my ice skates with me and whether the ice was thick and reliable enough to ice skate on remains to be seen, but it was clear that people enjoyed ice skating. It was all frozen ice fun! As long as you stayed on the part in the middle of the water, because there the ice was thick enough to carry you.

In any case, I was able to shoot some nice pictures and you can see my video of the ice skating here: Kinderdijk | Ice skating on nature ice

Of course I also stood on the ice for a while, even though I was shocked a few times when I heard the ice crack under my feet ?

This was the last day you could ice skate at Kinderdijk for the time being, because the following week the temperatures would rise again and the ice would thaw. But don’t worry, winter is not over yet and who knows, this winter has even more beautiful ice skating days in store.

Will you also be there? ❄️⛸️
