A Journey Through ‘The Great Indonesia Exhibition’ in Amsterdam

Recently, I embarked on a special journey to ‘De Nieuwe Kerk’ in Amsterdam to explore ‘The Great Indonesia Exhibition.’ For a more in-depth insight into my experiences, you can also read my guest blog post on ‘Taste the Far East.’

On a Journey with the Becak

My journey of discovery through this extensive exhibition began with the becak (bicycle taxi). The becak took me through the winding paths of the exhibition, symbolizing the diversity and complexity of Indonesia.

Background of the Exhibition

‘The Great Indonesia Exhibition’ is a collaboration between partners from Indonesia and the Netherlands. It guides visitors through the ancient history of Indonesia, from its lush nature to the influential ancient realms that shaped the country.

Stories Coming to Life

With over three hundred objects and personal stories, the past truly comes to life. The diverse perspectives offer a profound view of Indonesian culture and history.

Silenced Stories: The Culture of Silence and Traces of the Past

An impressive aspect of the exhibition was the focus on silent stories. I hadn’t expected this to be part of the exhibition, but it deeply moved me. My father, who experienced life in a Japanese internment camp, never spoke about that time. It was a period never discussed at home, and I believe the culture of silence is recognizable to many with an Indo-Dutch background in the Netherlands. It’s touching to see these stories now being told and space given to the past.

Unique Experience: Thematic Exploration and Personal Reflection

The exhibition covers a wide range of themes, from the rich nature of Nusantara to the complex history of World War II and the struggle for independence. It adds a deeper layer to the personal experience. My journey in ‘The Great Indonesia Exhibition’ was a voyage of discoveries and reflections.
