Meijendel, an extensive dune area in South Holland, offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of the Randstad. It is a beautiful natural area that is part of the ‘Hollandse Duinen’ National Park. The landscape is diverse, with rugged dunes along the coast, lush forests, and winding waterways. In this blog, I’ll take you on an adventure through the tranquil landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and breathtaking views of Meijendel.

A Day Out in Nature
For a delightful day out in nature, Meijendel is the perfect destination. Here, you can enjoy the fresh air and the scent of the forest as you explore the diverse landscapes. Discover expansive grasslands and grazing areas, while encountering various species of animals along the way, such as wild Konik horses and elusive deer.

Or walk to a bird observation point overlooking a dune lake to spot various bird species. Meijendel is among the top ten most bird-rich areas in the Netherlands, with over two hundred and fifty species of birds.

Hiking and biking routes
There are various hiking and biking routes that lead you through this beautiful landscape. This way, you can explore the nature reserve at your own pace. Choose from hiking routes of various lengths and difficulty levels, such as the yellow beach route that leads to the dunes and the beach, or the blue oak route that takes you through narrow paths in oak forests. You can recognize the hiking trails by the colored posts in the area.

Peace and Space in ‘Kijfhoek & Bierlap’
Peace and space are abundant in Meijendel, especially in areas like Kijfhoek & Bierlap. Access to this area does require a day pass. It is a rest area for nature, where there are no official hiking trails, but only sandy paths. You rarely meet people here, which sometimes gives you the feeling of being completely alone.

The lack of clear paths can make you get lost, but you can get a map at the information center. Although there are green posts, they only mark the presence of walking areas and do not form specific hiking routes. However, there are numbered posts in the area that roughly correspond to the map, giving you an idea of your location.

Initially, I was a bit concerned about getting lost, but in the end I actually enjoyed the adventurous experience of being in nature and enjoying the peace and quiet.
Protected Nature Reserve
Meijendel is not only a stunning natural area, but also an essential part of the drinking water supply for more than one million people. The dunes act as a natural filter for our drinking water, making the area play a crucial role in maintaining the natural balance.
