Chinese New Year in The Hague

Chinese New Year in The Hague.

Watch my video here: Chinese New Year in The Hague.

Chinese New Year in The Hague is always a fantastic experience. While the Chinese New Year in China lasts for fifteen days, it is also celebrated with great enthusiasm outside China. After earlier celebrations in cities like Antwerp and Rotterdam this year, I looked forward to experiencing the festivities in The Hague. As the cherry on top, on February 24, 2024, the final day of the celebration, I found myself in The Hague, the beautiful city behind the dunes. The festivities took place both at the Spui City Hall and in the vibrant Chinatown. What made this celebration extra special was that it took place in Chinatown for the first time in three years.

Parade through the City

A colorful parade through the streets of The Hague.

The day began with a lively parade through the center of The Hague. From the Spui City Hall, the dragon and lions were accompanied by music as they paraded through the streets of The Hague and Chinatown. It was a festive experience to be part of this colorful parade. In the video below, you can experience the entire parade as I join in.

Official Opening at City Hall

Speeches and cultural performances filled the city hall.

Following the parade, the official opening took place at the Spui City Hall. The Mayor of The Hague, Jan van Zanen, the Chinese Ambassador Tan Jian, and other prominent guests addressed the audience, including a Chinese New Year’s video message from Prime Minister Rutte. This was followed by performances by local artists. The city hall was filled with people enjoying the beautiful Chinese costumes and the varied cultural program.

Festivities in Chinatown

A return to tradition after three years of absence.

After the festivities at the city hall, I went to the bustling Chinatown, where the official opening took place at the Rabbi Maarsenplein. After a three-year absence due to the pandemic and a canceled celebration last year, the tradition of Chinese New Year was a welcome return to Chinatown. The mayor struck the gong and a booming fireworks display marked the start of the celebration. The dragon and lion dances followed, accompanied by the stirring sound of drums and cymbals.

Fireworks and Lion Dance

A ritual of luck and prosperity.

The colorful lions paid visits to various Asian shops and restaurants in Chinatown The Hague. With enormous strings of one hundred thousand crackers filling the streets with bangs, the celebration became even more spectacular. These lion dances were not only impressive to watch but also symbolized luck and prosperity for the community.

Musical Atmosphere and Delicious Food

Dining options in Chinatown.

A roaming DJ created a musical atmosphere in the streets of Chinatown, while visitors could enjoy delicious dishes at the various restaurants and Asian shops in Chinatown.
