Watch my video here: Japanese Garden in Autumn.
On a rainy autumn day, where the leaves slowly changed their colors, I visited the Japanese Garden in The Hague. Raindrops fell on the leaves, creating a calming effect. Located on the idyllic Clingendael Estate, this Japanese Garden offers an oasis of peace and beauty amidst the seasonal changes.

A Unique Piece of Japan in the Netherlands: Clingendael’s Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden at Clingendael Estate is an extraordinary specimen in the Netherlands. It is not only the sole garden in Japanese style from the early 20th century, but also the largest of its kind in the Netherlands, spanning an area of 6800 square meters.

An Heirloom of Miss Daisy
The Japanese Garden was created around 1910 by Marguérite Mary Baroness van Brienen (1871-1939), nicknamed ‘Miss Daisy’. During her travels in Japan, she brought essential elements, including Oriental lanterns, stones, figurines, bridges, and even a charming tea house. The finishing touch was provided by the Japanese gardeners in The Hague, who used their expertise to bring this garden to full bloom.

The Harmony of Nature
One of the most striking aspects of the Japanese Garden is the careful attention to detail. Every element seems to be placed with a purpose. From the carefully constructed bridges to the strategically placed stones that create a sense of balance and harmony, everything contributes to the serene atmosphere of the garden.

Essential Element: The Pond in the Japanese Garden
The heart of the Japanese Garden is formed by the serene pond, surrounded by stone lanterns and beautiful sculptures. The water’s surface reflects the vibrant autumn colors, while raindrops create gentle ripples, creating a calm atmosphere that makes you momentarily forget about time.

Autumn Splendor in the Flora and Luxuriant Moss
In autumn, the Japanese Garden displays a beautiful play of colors. The Japanese maples immediately stand out with their striking leaf colors, ranging from deep red to bright orange. Along the paths, vibrant green moss grows, covering the ground like a living carpet. Additionally, the lush bamboo adds an element of tranquility and elegance to the whole, with its soft leaves and flexible stems swaying gently in the wind.

A Place of Reflection
As I walked through the garden, its meaning dawned on me. It is not just a visual experience, but an invitation to introspection. An invitation to slow down and reconnect with the rhythms of nature.
