Climb the Terril of Charleroi
Did you know that Charleroi has its own mountain? During my adventurous jungle safari, climbing this mountain was a must-do activity. However, the terril, as it is called, is not a natural mountain. It is actually a pile of mining waste that has turned into a lush green mountain over time, overgrown with plants and trees. This unique feature fits perfectly into Charleroi’s industrial character.
Before the tour, the guide checked the fitness of the group. The tour may vary, depending on the group composition. Fortunately, I was in a group with fit people. Climbing the terril was quite a challenge, but the breathtaking view from the top made it more than worth it. You could see Charleroi as far as the eye could see!

Located south of Charleroi lies a memorial site, that takes us back to a tragic chapter in the history of Charleroi. Bois du Cazier, once a bustling coal mine, tells the story of a fatal day that left deep scars.
Bois du Cazier was once a busy coal mine. Hundreds of workers, including many Italians, worked here. Their lives revolved around mining coal and helping Charleroi thrive. But on a fateful day in 1956, everything changed. A major mistake led to a devastating fire, claiming the lives of two hundred sixty-two miners from various countries. This tragedy left families shattered with grief.
Today, Bois du Cazier reminds us of the dark period in Charleroi’s history. It is more than just a museum; it is a tribute to those who lost their lives in Belgium’s worst mining disaster. Recognized by UNESCO since 2012, it invites visitors to enter the tunnels, learn more about the miners, and pay their respects at the monument.

Charleroi is also easily reachable by car. The city is accessible via highways. Parking is organized in five zones, with cheap parking options available just outside the city center. From there, you have good connections to public transport.
