In today’s Vlog video: I am wearing a beautiful red dress, called the Fringe Soulmates dress, I am having an interview with Sherani Girjasing, owner of restaurant INDY Scheveningen where we talk about eating Asian, Surinamese, and Indian food and I will show you the surroundings of The Hague and Scheveningen Beach.
This morning started with heavy thunder and rain, you can hardly believe it, but later in the afternoon the sun appeared in the sky and it promised to be a hot sunny day. The weather forecast predicted that it would be twenty five degrees today, so my friend and I wanted to have a picnic at the beach.
The plan was, to go give a visit at restaurant INDY Scheveningen and have an interview with the owner, to make some beautiful pictures of the different kind of foods that you can eat at INDY Scheveningen and then take the food with us to have a picnic on the beach. I already took my basket with a soft blanket in it, which we could spread out on the beach, where we could put all the delicious food on and then decorate it with flowers.
We wanted to make photos of our picnic at the beach, while we were eating the food, with us sitting on the blanket, wearing a beautiful dress with in the backdrop, an atmospheric sunset. What a magical shot this would be! We only forgot to bring the flowers, so we thought of buying it at the nearest flower store. The question is: could we make it on time before the store closed and after we finished the interview?
It was a very beautiful Sunday, with the perfect weather to sit outside on the terras, while enjoying some tasteful food and drinks. Good news for the catering industry; the terraces had just been opened for a week, which made us people very happy, and business flow easily. You can imagine that the terras of INDY Scheveningen was full and that Sherani and her team were very busy, serving all those happy customers.
Sherani had her hands full, so we had to wait a little bit before we could take the interview. In the meanwhile, we were treated to some refreshing coconut juice, made from fresh tropical coconuts and we drank INDY’s homemade ice tea. Sherani also gave us some snacks, a shrimp platter with chili sauce. My eyes already ate all the snacks on the plate, but we couldn’t touch it, because we had to bring the food to the beach, to make photos of it. That’s where reality hits the empty stomach. The life of a food blogger; eating cold food afterwards.
It was time to go inside INDY Scheveningen and take the interview with Sherani Girjasing. This is her story:
Welcome to INDY.
We recently opened, actually it has been two months now. I am going to show you the photo wall. We started in September 2019. All you see here is Buddha Bowl, it was called Buddha Bowl Scheveningen. We made Pokeh Bowls and Buddha Bowls. Two months ago I changed the concept into a Surinamese kitchen. It’s called INDY Scheveningen now. Nasi, roti and fried rice. It’s a total concept change, but still with the same love. The name INDY
It’s short for.. I am Hindustani. We are from Surinam, but originally we are from India. There are a lot of dishes, for example the roti. You can call it Hindi and then in short it is Hind, and then it’s INDY, but also I like the name very much. It also has to do with the food. That’s the story behind it.The Kitchen
Maybe you can come to check out the kitchen. This is where we make all our food. It’s a small but cozy kitchen, I love it very much. One of the things I love very much is the fresh coconuts we sell. We use fresh coconuts, which we cut open here, so you have the most fresh water you can possibly think of. We use the young coconuts. Definitely our recommendation.
As you all know, the terraces are opened, so I invented the small terras menu. It’s a fusion kitchen, so Surinamese you can find, Thai and also Indian curry.
Fried Banana
Actually it’s a plantain, not really a banana. We call it fried banana on the menu. It’s very simple, very plain. It’s important that the banana is ripe, the riper the sweeter. This is it, the plantain, the banana, fried and the best it’s with the peanut sauce. I am going to fry it.
This is the sauce. What we also use a lot is Madame Jeanette, a Surinamese pepper. It’s also in this peanut sauce, but very finely grinded. You have a red one and a yellow one. This one is very spicy, but the yellow one is not so much. Mildly spicy. You can also make this with coconut milk.
The banana leave goes right there. There you have it, your fried banana. I am going to put the peanut sauce with it. I am curious about what you guys think of it.The food on the table
This is the fried banana with peanut sauce. We have different kind of buns. This one is the one with sardines, which is fish. We have filled barras. This one is with chicken and vegetables and this one is with bakkeljauw, cod fish and a nice sauce with it. These are the rotis. This is the vegetarian version, a potato roti, because you also have roti with lentils. This one is with potatoes, some green beans and Massala. It’s a Surinamese dish. We’ve got two beautiful home made ice teas. Not to forget, the shrimp platter with chili sauce. Two fresh coconuts and last but not least, the deserts. This is our special raspberry desert and this is our famous spekkoek, a layer cake from Indonesia.
That’s it. You’ve got your starter, your mains, your deserts and your drinks.Enjoy!
We decided to eat at INDY Scheveningen, because it was almost six o’clock in the evening when we were finished and we were very hungry at that time! We put all the dishes on a different table to make some street shots of the food with a view on The Hague streets. The flower stores were closed at that moment, but we found some other flowers to be creative with.
We enjoyed the different dishes of INDY Scheveningen, it was so much worth the wait. A part of the food we brought with us to Scheveningen, because the terraces had to be closed at 18.00 pm, but at least we had a full tummy to move on.
We were grateful for the time and effort that Sherani and her team gave to us and all the delicious food that we were able to taste. Please visit INDY Scheveningen yourself, let us know what you think and leave your comments below.
