Watch my video here: Magical Winter in Antwerp.
The trip to Antwerp doesn’t start when the city comes into view but right on the train. The old Belgian train, adorned with graffiti, immediately captures attention as you step onto the platform. A waving Santa, surrounded by a thin layer of snow, welcomes you on this journey to the heart of Belgium. Upon exiting Antwerp’s station, the warmly lit Ferris wheel on Koningin Astridplein awaits, looking even more enchanting in the evening. But let’s begin with exploring the various Christmas markets that Antwerp boasts.

Seven Christmas Markets
Magical Winter Locations
Antwerp dazzles during the Magical Winter with its seven Christmas markets spread across the city. The entire city is adorned with Christmas lights. The locations of the Christmas markets are:
- Koningin Astridplein
- Operaplein
- Groenplaats
- Handschoenmarkt
- Grote Markt
- Hendrik Conscienceplein
- Suikerrui

Operaplein

On Operaplein, you’ll taste the cozy winter atmosphere surrounded by wooden Christmas stalls filled with delights. It’s a perfect place to get your initial impressions of the Magical Winter in Antwerp before diving into the bustling city life.
Groenplaats
Skating with a View
Once the setting for the Christmas market, Groenplaats now offers a new experience. An indoor ice rink now occupies the space, surrounded by wooden chalets filled with treats. Skating with a view of the majestic Cathedral of Our Lady is an experience not to be missed. Treat yourself to bacon fries, spirellos, and warm mulled wine while absorbing the atmosphere of this Christmas location.

Handschoenmarkt
A Photogenic Christmas Tree
A Christmas market isn’t complete without an imposing Christmas tree. Handschoenmarkt boasts such a specimen, so large that there’s a ladder in front for taking photos. The Christmas tree serves as the perfect gateway to the impressive Cathedral of Our Lady.
Grote Markt
Plaza Historica – The Epicenter
The Grote Markt, renamed Plaza Historica, is the heart of the Christmas market in Antwerp. An abundance of stalls with Belgian delights, from waffles to chocolate, awaits. Here, you’ll also encounter the Joe Christmas House, a glass house where local radio station Joe plays live Christmas tunes. The historic buildings and the town hall, illuminated with Christmas lights, create a picturesque backdrop.

Hendrik Conscienceplein
Picturesque Winter Magic
On the picturesque Hendrik Conscienceplein, surrounded by the Saint Charles Borromeo Church, you’ll find a selection of Christmas stalls. An intimate location where Winter Magic comes to life.
Suikerrui
Lichtjeslaan – Sparkling Light Tunnel
The Christmas markets are connected via Suikerrui, renamed Lichtjeslaan. Lichtjeslaan connects these markets and introduces a sparkling light tunnel to the city. Suikerrui hosts some stalls to pamper your senses. A walk through Lichtjeslaan is like a journey through a winter wonderland.
