As night falls in Amsterdam, the city is draped in darkness, but only for a moment. Suddenly, the city awakens in a sea of light. This is no ordinary evening in the capital; this is the Amsterdam Light Festival 2023-2024, the twelfth edition of an annual event that transforms the city into an artistic paradise of light.
A World of Light Art
Founded in 2012, the Amsterdam Light Festival gathers contemporary artists, designers, and architects to fill the city with unique light art installations. Throughout the months of December and January, specially designed installations are exhibited, turning the streets and canals of Amsterdam into an open-air museum of light.
Theme: Loading | Revealing Art, AI, and Tech
This year, the theme ‘Loading’ invites exploration into the influence of artificial intelligence and technology on our daily lives. Artists have embraced the challenge of creating light art that reflects on the omnipresence of technology, with our beloved mobile phones as an iconic symbol.
Experience the Route
The artworks are not merely to observe but to experience. Unfolded along a 4.6 miles walking route along the canals is an interactive spectacle. For an alternative perspective on these light artworks, consider a boat tour over the water.
Take a seat on a white bench, surrounded by luminous images of people on their mobile phones, and let the impact of technology resonate within you. Or immerse yourself in a dance with the light. While you dance from a distance, an engaging spectacle unfolds before your eyes – moving ‘molecules’ synchronizing with your dance steps. It almost feels like choreographing with the invisible forces of light.
Lights On, Lights Off
From November 30, 2023, to January 21, 2024, visitors have the opportunity to experience the city like never before. Amsterdam comes to life with light;
- Sunday to Tuesday: 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
- Wednesday to Saturday: 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Two exceptions:
- December 23, 2023, to January 7, 2024: 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m..
- On New Year’s Eve, darkness prevails as we bid farewell to the year.
Information Points and Festival Hub
To enhance your journey, information points are scattered along the route. The Stoperaplein and the temporary Hoftuin are welcoming spots where volunteers are ready to assist. During the Christmas vacation, the Hoftuin transforms into a festival hub with two additional light artworks, an information point, and hospitality options – all free to access.

The Amsterdam Light Festival is a cultural foundation that doesn’t receive structural subsidies. By attending the festival, you contribute to the continuation of this valuable tradition. Every euro goes directly back to the arts, ensuring not just a dazzling experience but also supporting the artists.
