Watch my video here: Christmas Market in Budapest.
It was on a cold December morning as I walked through the streets of Budapest, wrapped in a warm winter coat. My curious gaze was immediately drawn to the impressive St. Stephen’s Basilica, where the scent of freshly baked treats and the cheerful sound of Christmas music blended together. The Christmas market at the foot of St. Stephen’s Basilica revealed an array of handmade treasures and Hungarian delicacies. Just a short walk away, on Vörösmarty Tér, I found myself immersed in a lively mix of lights, music, and heartwarming food. Fashion Street offered a different experience, adorned with luxury brands and sparkling Christmas lights. And just outside the city center, I discovered the City Park Ice Rink, where skating fun harmonized with the majestic Vajdahunyad Castle. Thus began my exploration of Budapest’s Christmas markets, infused with winter coziness and local traditions.

The Christmas market boasts an abundance of delicious Hungarian treats, including the popular Lángos – fried dough with various toppings like sour cream and cheese. Another flavorful delight is the iconic cylindrical pastry called Kürtőskalács, a Hungarian chimney cake made from sweet dough spun around a conical baking spit and rolled in granulated sugar. Traditional flavors such as vanilla, cinnamon, and coconut flakes are available, along with more daring variations, including salted versions.
