Watch my video here: Scheveningen Kite Festival.
The Scheveningen Kite Festival 2023, the largest international kite event in the Netherlands, is a colorful spectacle in the sky that returns to Scheveningen every year. Kite enthusiasts from all over the world gather on the beach of Scheveningen to display their most magnificent kites in the air. The kite festival in Scheveningen has been taking place since 1978. This year marks the 43rd time the kite festival is being organized in Scheveningen.
Kite Weekend
The kite festival takes place during the weekend of Saturday, September 23, 2023, until Sunday, September 24, 2023. Despite the unfavorable weather forecasts and a rainy start to the day, I decided to take a look today, on Saturday (at the time of writing this blog). And I’m so glad I went. In this blog, I will take you on a kite-flying journey through this spectacular event.
Imaginary World
Upon arriving at the beach in Scheveningen, I was pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of kites filling the sky in all possible shapes and sizes. Colorful kites adorned the air, ranging from an ocean full of fish to flying cats and intriguing rectangular forms. It seemed as if the kites led their own lives, soaring back and forth to the rhythm of the wind, filling the air with their own imaginative world.
A Picturesque Kite Location
No summer-blue skies, but white cumulus clouds and threatening dark gray clouds drifting above the blue sky. Occasionally, a beam of sunlight pierced through the clouds. With the colorful kites against this backdrop, the view becomes extra spectacular, providing a wonderful opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture stunning photos.
A Cultural Exchange in the Sky
What makes this kite festival so special is the international mix of participants. Kite enthusiasts from all corners of the world bring their unique kites to Scheveningen. It was also beautiful to see that the kites all floated harmoniously in the air. The lines remained neatly alongside each other.
Workshops for Young and Old
The festival also offers a variety of workshops for both young and old. Under the guidance of experienced kite flyers, both adults and children have the opportunity to create their own kite and send it soaring into the sky. A fantastic opportunity to actively participate in the kite festival!
