The Drachenfels in the Siebengebirge in Germany

Discover the Drachenfels in Germany, one of the peaks of the Siebengebirge, located along the banks of the Rhine. Early in the morning, before Bonn woke up, I was ready for a day in nature. My destination? The Drachenfels, just outside Bonn, a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. In this blog, I take you on an adventurous trip to the Drachenfels.

The Journey to the Drachenfels begins: From Bonn to Königswinter

After a delightful Turkish breakfast in Bonn, I headed to the foot of Drachenfels. A quick bus ride from Bonn took me to Bonn-Beuel train station. From there, I boarded the train towards Koblenz to Königswinter. There’s something exciting about exploring new places while traveling. The short train ride gave me time to reminisce about past train adventures as the landscape passed by.

The Beauty of the Siebengebirge

Upon arriving in Königswinter, at the foot of the Siebengebirge, I encountered the natural beauty of this ancient volcanic mountain range, which dates back millions of years. This is where I began my short hike to the top of Drachenfels, situated at an altitude of 321 meters. Although the walk only took half an hour, I marveled at the mountains and wooded hills surrounding me.

Drachenfelsbahn: Easy Ride to the Top

If you prefer not to walk, you can also opt for the cogwheel train. The Drachenfelsbahn offers a convenient option to reach the top. This historic cog railway is active since 1883. It connects the old town of Königswinter with the Drachenfels plateau. From the Wintermühlenhof 11 station in Königswinter, you can enjoy a nostalgic ride up to the top. You can visit the Drachenfelsbahn website for more information about tickets and departure times.

The Legend of the Dragon of Drachenfels

One of the most intriguing stories surrounding Drachenfels is the legend of the dragon. According to this legend, there once lived a dragon named Fafnir on the slope of Drachenfels. This dragon terrorized the area by threatening maidens and sailors. Luckily, a brave hero named Siegfried came to the rescue. After an epic battle, Siegfried defeated the dragon and liberated the area from its tyranny. The tale of the dragon Fafnir and Siegfried’s heroic deeds remains an important part of Drachenfels folklore to this day.

Fairytale Castle Drachenburg

On the way to the top, I came across the fairytale Drachenburg Castle. This castle, built between 1882 and 1884, offers a spectacular view of the Rhine valley. You can admire the beautiful historical architecture and learn more about the castle’s history on a museum visit or guided tour. The address is Drachenfelsstraße 51, Königswinter. For more information about tickets and opening times, you can visit the Schloss Drachenburg website.

At the Top: The View from the Drachenfels Plateau

I reached the top of Drachenfels, where a breathtaking panorama of the Rhine Valley greeted me. It’s the perfect place to take a break and enjoy the impressive view. On the plateau, you can also find a restaurant where you can relax and enjoy a snack or drink while surrounded by beautiful nature.

The Medieval Ruin of Drachenfels

At the top of the Drachenfels, you’ll find a medieval ruin called Burg Drachenfels. You can explore the ruin for free. Archbishop Arnold I of Cologne built it between 1138 and 1167 to serve as a fortress protecting the region from invaders from the south. Although Protestant Swedes destroyed the castle in 1634, its remains still serve as a fascinating reminder of the past.
