Top of Innsbruck | Snow Fun in Winter

Do you love winter as much as I do? Are the winter months your favorite time of the year? Then a visit to Innsbruck in winter is highly recommended.

I love winter. Snow, cold temperatures, and fresh mountain air make me happy. With that in mind, I wanted to travel to Innsbruck for one main reason: heading into the mountains. To the Top of Innsbruck.

In less than two hours by plane from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, you find yourself in Innsbruck. A city that is beautiful in both summer and winter, but in winter it has just that little bit extra. Let me take you along in this blog.

Innsbruck

Innsbruck is located in the southwest of Austria and is the capital of the federal state of Tyrol. It is a medium-sized, medieval city situated along the River Inn and surrounded by impressive mountains. This combination of city life and nature is what makes Innsbruck so special.

Arrival at Innsbruck Kranebitten Airport

Innsbruck Kranebitten Airport is the largest international airport in Tyrol. From the airport, the city center is easy to reach by public transport. I had already received the Welcome Card from my accommodation in advance, super convenient. With this card, you can travel for free on public transport and receive discounts on many attractions.

I took the bus and within 20 minutes I was already in the heart of Innsbruck. Ideal.

Sights & Atmosphere

Innsbruck is compact and easy to explore. You can see the city in just a few days, and most sights are located close to each other. It’s also a great day trip if you’re staying elsewhere in Austria. After Innsbruck, I continued my journey to Vienna, which is about four hours and fifteen minutes by train. I stayed in Innsbruck for three days.

What immediately stands out are the beautifully colored houses along the River Inn and the charming streets of the old town.

Winter in Innsbruck

In winter, Innsbruck is very beautiful. Surrounded by snow-covered mountains, the city feels almost idyllic. The many Christmas markets create a warm and cozy atmosphere.

When I arrived in the evening, I walked along the Maria-Theresien-Straße, Innsbruck’s main shopping street. Everywhere there were Christmas lights, a Christmas market, people holding mugs of mulled wine, and cheerful conversations in the background. It was lively, yet somehow… calm.

What stood out to me most was the serene quietness. Despite the traffic and the number of people, the city felt peaceful. Maybe it’s because of the surrounding mountains, the crisp air, or the cool winter wind. It gave the city a very different energy compared to the hustle and bustle I’m used to, and I loved it.

To the Top of Innsbruck with the Nordkette Cable Car

After a short walk through the city, passing sights like the Golden Roof, the narrow streets of the Riesengasse (the street of the giants), and the Hofgasse filled with souvenirs, it was time for the highlight of the trip: the Top of Innsbruck.

Nordkette Cable Car

Within 30 minutes, you can travel from the city center to the top of the mountain using the Nordkette cable car.

The route is as follows:

  • Start at Innsbruck Station Congress / Altstadt
  • Take the Hungerburgbahn
  • Transfer to the Seegrubenbahn
  • Then take the Hafelekarbahn to Hafelekar Station

Nordkette is the mountain range, and Hafelekar is the summit.

Along the way, the Hungerburgbahn stops at the Alpine Zoo, a zoo located high in the mountains that you can visit if you like.

Tickets | Top of Innsbruck

I bought the Top of Innsbruck ticket. The regular price is € 56, but with the Welcome Card I received a 20% discount and paid € 44.80.

Innsbruck Station Hungerburg

Hungerburg

Already at the first stop, Hungerburg Station, you get a beautiful view over Innsbruck. In winter, there is also a cozy Christmas market here: the Hungerburg Christmas Market. You can enjoy a drink or meal at Hungerburg CAFE • BAR • RESTAURANT.

Seegrube | Snow, Sun & Fun

The Seegrubenbahn takes you to Seegrube Station, a lively plateau on the mountain. Here you can relax at Restaurant Seegrube or on the Cloud 9 Sun Terrace.

I didn’t expect it to be so pleasant in the mountains. Snow everywhere, yet with the sun on your face it almost feels like sitting on the beach, except instead of the sea, you’re looking out over the mountains. Just as beautiful, maybe even more so.

Snow Fun

The pure white snow was stunning. People of all ages were sledding down the slopes. Of course, I had to try it myself. What fun! For winter sports lovers, there are also plenty of opportunities to ski or snowboard.

Hafelekar | Top of Innsbruck

With the Hafelekarbahn, you reach Hafelekar Station: the Top of Innsbruck. From the viewpoint, you can see the entire city and the surrounding mountains.

The actual peak is a bit higher. You can walk the last part up to the summit. It can be slippery due to snow, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

The view from the top was breathtaking. Vast, quiet, white. An experience I will never forget.

Beautiful mountain view

Staying at Absteige Innsbruck Zentrale Ferienapartments

I stayed at Absteige Innsbruck Zentrale Ferienapartments. Before arrival, you receive a code that allows you to collect the key from a locker in the apartment building across the street.

I booked a single room. Small, but exactly what you need when traveling alone. The apartment is slightly uphill, but easy to reach by bus (two stops) or on foot (about 10 minutes).

Breakfast is not included, but there’s a bakery on the same street with delicious fresh bread. The supermarket is also nearby. Across from the apartment is a church, and you can hear the bells ringing throughout the day. In the background, you see the mountains, a lovely place to wake up.

The room included:

  • a single bed
  • desk with chairs
  • refrigerator
  • sink, mirror, hairdryer
  • coffee machine & kettle

The shower is in the room, while the toilet is in the hallway. It can be cold in the hallway, but the room itself is well heated. Even though it’s a shared apartment, I didn’t see any other guests. I slept very well.

Winter Tips Outside the City Center

LUMAGICA in the Hofgarten

In the evening, the historic Hofgarten transforms into a fairytale. During LUMAGICA, you walk through the park past artistic light installations that illuminate the trees, paths, and ponds. Colors, shapes, and light art create a wonderful atmosphere. A walk through the Hofgarten feels like an oasis of light during the dark winter days. Peaceful, impressive, and atmospheric; a fantastic way to end a winter evening in Innsbruck.

LUMAGICA Innsbruck can be visited until February 1, 2026.

Another great excursion is a visit to the Swarovski Crystal Worlds. Located outside Innsbruck (about 45 minutes by bus), it’s definitely worth the trip if you enjoy crystals and art.

Conclusion

I absolutely loved Innsbruck in winter. The combination of city life, mountains, snow, and tranquility made it a wonderful winter destination for me. There’s plenty to do for young and old, for nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts alike.

Do you love winter? Then Innsbruck is definitely worth a visit.
